What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, or 'trance', which is used in hypnotherapy to bring about personal development, problem resolution and self healing.
The state of hypnosis or trance can be measured, and research shows brain waves occurring which are distinctly different from those during sleeping and waking states.
Hypnosis is an everyday phenomenon although we usually don't recognise it as such and have no idea of the power contained within it. Common examples are daydreaming, being very focused on a task, being very absorbed in some leisure activity, watching TV or reading a book, that comfortable state just between sleeping and waking.
Neuroscientists estimate that we ordinarily use only 10% of our minds' capacity and so we are astonished when we hear occasional reports of people suddenly displaying extraordinary powers of strength or courage - a mother who is suddenly able to lift a bus to save her child, a badly injured man who inexplicably manages to get himself to safety, or someone who recovers from a life threatening illness despite all the odds.
In hypnotherapy we skillfully harness the power of the everyday trance state to gain access to our unconscious mind - this is the 90% of our minds' capacity which many people never use unless they are suddenly thrown into a life or death situation like the people in the examples above. Your unconscious mind contains your unexplored potentials and untapped resources. This mind power can be used to solve problems, or to enhance personal performance in sport, sales or business for example. It already has the answers that you may not know you know, and will help you to achieve what you want.
Is it safe? Hypnosis is a powerful, naturally occurring and completely safe phenomenon, which can be used therapeutically to assist people to lead happier, healthier, more fulfilling, lives.
Sometimes people worry about feeling out of control; although the experience of trance is more like having your body comfortably asleep and your mind wide awake and alert to what is going on. You cannot be made to say or do anything that goes against your usual values or personal ethics.
